After seeing Kehinde Wiley’s Exhibition at the Brookyln Museum of Art, Michael Jackson hired the artist to have his likeness depicted in the regal styling typically seen in Wiley’s work. The painting was started and the two artists communicated on ensuing imagery. However, Jackson’s “elusive nature” caused communications to fall to the wayside and work on the piece was halted.
After Jackson’s untimely death the piece entitled “Equestrian Portrait of King Philip II” was completed and was on display at Miami’s Art Basel in all of its majestic glory.

From the box office success of “Michael Jackson’s This is It” to his rank as the third top-earning dead celebrity on Forbes’ list, it has become clear that paying homage to the posthumous reign of the King of Pop can really rake in some cash. There have been all kinds of strange fan art and home-made memorabilia popping up on websites like Etsy but also mass produced oddities like MJ packaging tape and air-fresheners. Over the next week or so I will be posting some of the best and wackiest of these tributes.
I thought I’d start with this great stop-motion dance-battle video by the creatively talented Patrick Boivin in which MJ goes up against Mr. Bean:
